Itineraries (thanks to the Associazione Ostuni Città Messapica)

Itinerary #1: Old Town of Ostuni
Guided Tour to find the origins of the White City.

This itinerary provides for a complete visit of the Historical Medieval Town of Ostuni called TERRA.

The tour starts from Piazza Libertà, the three-cornered and wide square, where there are the City Hall Palace, the Church of San Francesco, the Sant'Oronzo Column, the Church of the Holy Spirit. The next step is the visit to the ancient walls to watch the stunning landscape on Viale Oronzo Quaranta. The tour continues by entering the old medieval town through the San Demetrio Portal, walking on Via Bixio Continelli, a long street surrounded by arches and white walls.

Next step is a walk on Via Cattedrale until the face of the Church of San Vito Martire, now Museum of the Preclassic Civilizations, seat of a permanent exposition dedicated to the ancient farmers of the Mediterraneum. Here there is the copy of a very important remain: a woman and her fetus tracing back to 25.000 years ago (Upper Palaeolhytic).

Next step is Piazza Cattedrale, offering an architectural and artistic scenary of an uncommon beauty: the Cathedral (National Monument), the Episcopio and the Library, the Stone Bridge. Going down Vico Castello there is a great sight on the hills, the Olive trees and the sea.

Walking through the old town there is a feeling of a no time atmosphere. The visit ends on Porta Nova, the ancient entering door.

By this itinerary visitora may taste typical foods (oil, wine, orecchiette, cheese, sweets, dry figs, tosted almonds, jams and so on) and they can buy handcraft items (wicker baskets, laces, olive wood items, whistles and pottery) from the many little stores of the old town streets.

Waiting for the night shows, it is possible to visit the Ostuni Hills and the Sanctuary of Sant'Oronzo: Ostuni celebrates its protector by the famous ride on August 26

Naturalistic and Gastronomic Tour finding ancient and charming places.

The half-day tour inside this Mediterraneum frame is made of different steps.

First Step: visit to the numerous masserie (the farmers'houses) with the medieval oil-mills, drawn into the rock, where it is possible to watch the ancient places where olives were turned to oil.

Second Step: walk through a path surrounded by olive trees riding the old farmer horse dragged carts.

Third Step: lunch in one of the Masserie tasting typical foods.

Fourth Step: visit to the Sea of Ostuni, the cliffs and the thin sand beaches.
