The "Citta
Bianca" looks like built of white and light and its
visit is an unforgettable experience.
The
breathless landscape on the lower valley and the blue
sea suddenly opens when turning the old town corners.

The
old town centre, called Terra, in the same time monument and place of
the Historical Memory, is a maze full of amazing charme,
keeping the Medieval Architecture, made of little and
narrow streets and arches, surrounded by the powerful
City Walls.
The
White Maze, lime painted, named "CITTA'
BIANCA", is interrupted by the ochre faces of ancient
palaces, the churches, the fanciful portals exalting the
beauty of the local stone.
The
ancient Messapic City, was conquered by the Romans,
which have left traces in the ancient town and in the
"MASSERIE", built on the remains of Romans Villas.
Ostuni has been pillaged by Hannibal and after it has
been rebuilt by the Greek settlers and probably the
white color of the houses depends on this colonization |
|
|
After
the Roman Empire Fall, Ostuni was prey of the Longobards,
the Byzantine, the Saracens and the Normans. The
territory of Ostuni has been already inhabited by
Palaeolhytical Neanderthalian hunters: traces of this
colonization are well kept in the Phalaeolhtycal
Civilizations Museum in the old Church of the S. Vito
Martire in the old town of Ostuni.
Ostuni was elected City of Art on 1998 because of its
historical, artistic beauties and for its land: what the
visitors appreciate is the binomial culture-environment. Ostuni,
is a very ancient town with a great patrimony to be
still discovered in part.
The
City of Ostuni is in the middle of the Puglia Region:
it
will be easy to visit the City of Lecce and its famous
and unique Baroque, the City of Bari and its Gotic
Architecture and the Magna Grecia City of Taranto and
its historical Museum. |
 |
|
The
stay in Ostuni is strategic for visiting the nearby
places: Valle D'Itria, Alberobello, Egnazia, Caves
of Castellana, Polignano a Mare and many others. |
